GTA 6: Everything We Know Before 19 November

The Short Version

• Release: Thursday 19 November 2026.
• Platforms: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. There's no PC date yet; industry sources reported in October that it's planned for Q1 2027.

The Story

GTA 6 follows a criminal couple in a Bonnie and Clyde-style story:

• Jason Duval is ex-Army and has been working for drug runners in the Leonida Keys.
• Lucia Caminos is the series' first non-optional female protagonist. She was locked up in Leonida Penitentiary after fighting for her family, who are from Liberty City.

A bank heist goes wrong, the pair stumble into a state-wide conspiracy, and from then on they have to look out for each other. Like Red Dead Redemption 2, the story is split into chapters, and Rockstar wants players to bond with Jason and Lucia the way they did with Arthur Morgan. It's also the first mainline GTA story written without Dan Houser, who left Rockstar in 2020.

• Cal Hampton: Jason's paranoid friend.
• Boobie Ike: runs a business empire in Vice City.
• Dre'Quan Priest: co-owns the record label Only Raw Records with Boobie.
• Bae-Luxe and Roxy: the rap duo Real Dimez, signed to Only Raw.
• Raul Bautista: a veteran bank robber.
• Brian Heder (played by Stephen Root): a long-time Keys drug runner, and Jason's landlord.

The Map: Welcome to Leonida

The game is set in Leonida, a fictional Florida. Its map is reported to be three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2.

The satire targets the 2020s: influencer culture, social media, police bodycams and, naturally, Florida Man. Leonida even gets hurricanes and tropical storms, with local downpours, lingering puddles and the odd rainbow.

How It Plays

• Play as Jason or Lucia in third person, and switch between them.
• In free roam they can split up or hang out together. How close they get depends on you, and Rockstar says the relationship is optional.
• Side activities include skydiving, wrestling, basketball, working out and scuba diving.
• Bodies change: both characters can gain or lose weight, and if you keep them awake for days, it shows on their faces.
• The Criminal Profile tracks each character's reputation, a bit like RDR2's honour. Rockstar is clear it won't make them saints; it tracks whether they keep crime professional or go in for pointless violence.
• Snapmatic returns as an in-game social app that spoofs TikTok and Instagram.
• You can change their hair, clothes and accessories.
• NPCs are the most detailed Rockstar has made: over 600,000 unique animations, compared with 300,000 in RDR2 and 55,000 in GTA V. They'll notice you eavesdropping, and edge away when a masked Lucia pulls a gun.

One idea that didn't make it: having to buy groceries to restock the safehouse fridge. Rockstar dropped it because it "complicated the mechanics". Realism has limits.

Editions and Pre-orders

• Standard edition: $79.99.
• Ultimate Edition: extra clothes, hairstyles, locations, missions, tattoos, vehicles and weapons.
• Pre-order bonus: the Vintage Vice City Pack, inspired by GTA: Vice City and Tommy Vercetti.
• No microtransactions in either version at launch, Rockstar told Kinda Funny. It also confirmed there's no generative AI in the game.
• Pre-orders opened on 25 June. Take-Two called sales "unprecedented and astonishing".

There has been pushback. Players and journalists criticised the Ultimate-only content and the lack of discs, and some retailers refused to stock the game.

The Radio

Radio stations cover pop, country, hip-hop, African, Latin, classic rock, metal and more. V-Rock, Flash FM and Emotion 98.3 return from the Vice City games, alongside the '80s station Vice City FM. The celebrity DJs:

• Lana Del Rey and Morgan Wallen: Back Country Radio
• Bad Bunny and RaiNao: Cocoteo FM
• Robyn and Alex Consani: Flash FM

For the first time you can play podcasts on demand through your in-game phone, even on foot. The original score is by French duo Justice, and Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album has 34 original songs.

Trailers

• Trailer 1 (December 2023) reached 101 million views within two days, beating the lifetime views of GTA V's reveal.
• Trailer 2 (6 May 2025) had 475 million views across platforms in 24 hours, and won Best Game Trailer at the 2025 Golden Joystick Awards.
• An "extended look" premiered on Netflix on 27 August 2026, and Netflix and Twitch both buckled under the traffic.
• The pre-launch trailer (15 October) uses "Flower in a Hurricane" by Justice with Tame Impala, SZA and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard.

Miami Becomes Vice City

Since 1 October, the Kaseya Center's roof has read "Welcome to Vice City", a sign that cost $975,000. Wrapped GTA cars with Leonida plates are driving around Miami, there's a Vice City blimp in the sky, and Vice City beach chairs are out on Miami Beach. On 18 November, the night before launch, the Miami Heat play the Milwaukee Bucks as "Vice City". Not everyone's thrilled: Commissioner René García said he was "really uncomfortable" with the county backing a game "depicting Miami like a crime haven".

The Long Road Here

• February 2022: Rockstar confirms the game is in development.
• September 2022: one of the biggest leaks in gaming history.
• December 2023: reveal trailer, with a 2025 window.
• May 2025: delayed to 26 May 2026.
• November 2025: delayed again, to 19 November 2026, for "additional polishing".

Behind the scenes, Rockstar more than doubled its workforce to 4,711 people across 12 offices. Rockstar denies rumours that it cost over $1.5 billion, but won't give a figure.

Still Unknown

• An official PC date (only industry reports say Q1 2027).
• Any online mode. Rockstar has only described the single-player game.
• Whether 60 FPS ever arrives on consoles after launch.
